Density Altitude Display Can Reduce Accidents, Save Lives

Do you want to make your airport safe? Do your pilots SEE Density Altitude displayed? Density Altitude Display (DAD) information is very beneficial to any airport with a combination of higher temperatures and length of runway restrictions, as well as higher-elevation airports.

Our Density Altitude Display (DAD) measures temperature and pressure altitude at the runway threshold and displays it with large numerals with accuracy to the nearest 300 ft. (90M).

The DAD conforms to FAA airport signage regulations and is typically 35” high by 52” wide by 12” deep with 2 frangible mounts on the bottom and an extended sunshade above the lettering. High intensity LED’s increase visibility in direct sunlight as well as increase reliability and require less power to operate compared to incandescent lighting.

The DAD weighs approximately 60 pounds and is typically removed from service in winter at high altitude airports, whereas sea level airports would use it continuously.

Annual re-certification (tune up) is recommended. 110V 60Hz power supply is standard equipment and solar or 12V is optional. Power consumption is ~ 24 watts. Runway length can be continuously displayed (static display) beneath the LED numerals with reflective numerals.

About Wilson Consultants, LLC

Wilson Consultants has a long history in aviation

Mike Wilson, our founder, has a long history and experience in aviation. Mike acquired a company that was licensed by Boeing to manufacture electronic test equipment for Boeing aircraft. During that tenure we wanted to expand our product offering, stay within the aviation industry, and focus more on the General Aviation market. Our research revealed a void in awareness and a lack of emphasis on the effects of Density Altitude. There were many incidents related to Density Altitude (especially at airports at elevation). So, we aspired to increase the awareness of Density Altitude by developing a product that would display Density Altitude visually. I believe that even with Density Altitude occasionally mentioned (orally) through various airport communication sites, the information about this insidious phenomenon is inadequate. This product is designed with the intention of visually reminding the pilot about Density Altitude.
Assume a private airplane is departing a higher elevation airport. Let’s say that airport is 5,000’ MSL. Standard temperature there is 42 degrees F. Assuming the airplane arrives in the morning, the crew conducts their business & departs in the afternoon where the temperature has risen to 79 degrees, the airplane would “think” it’s almost at 7,000 ft. and the airplane would perform as if it were at 7,000 ft. (less horsepower, less propeller thrust & less wing lift than at 5,000 ft.)

In addition, Mike was in the US Air Force specializes in communication such as radio, radar, telephone etc. He is also a former Rockwell International employee during the Saturn V project. In the past, Mike also worked for McDonnell Douglas as an industrial engineer.
